Rabbit

Rabbit health: daily checks and warning signs

Rabbits are prey animals and hide illness until it is advanced, so daily observation matters more than in most pets. Appetite and droppings are the two signals that catch the most problems early. Any rabbit that stops eating or stops passing droppings needs veterinary care the same day.

Quick reference

Commonly cited lifespan
8 - 12 years
Diet by volume
Mostly grass hay, all day
Teeth
Grow continuously, need wear
Housing temperature
Cool, well ventilated, out of direct sun

Check every day

  • Check that hay is being eaten and water is going down.
  • Look at droppings: number, size and shape, and any change to soft or absent.
  • Run your hands over the body for lumps, mats, and a scruffy or damp rear end.
  • Watch posture and movement for hunching, reluctance to hop, or head tilt.
  • Check eyes and nose for discharge and the front teeth for uneven wear.

Track over time

  • Gradual weight change measured on the same scale each week.
  • Drooling, dropping food, or preferring soft food over hay.
  • Thinning coat, dandruff, or bald patches at the hocks.
  • Reduced grooming, which often shows first as a matted rump.

Call a veterinarian now

Any of these means rabbits need professional care without waiting. Do not use an app to decide whether to go.

  • Not eating or not passing droppings for 12 hours or more.
  • Sitting hunched and pressing the abdomen, or grinding teeth in pain.
  • Laboured or open-mouth breathing.
  • Head tilt, rolling, or sudden loss of balance.
  • A soiled or maggot-affected rear end in warm weather.
  • Any wound from a predator or another animal.

If your pet is in distress - collapse, laboured breathing, seizures, uncontrolled bleeding, suspected poisoning, bloat, or trauma - stop and contact an emergency veterinarian or a poison control line immediately. Do not wait for a scan result.

Common questions

How do I know if my rabbit is sick?
The earliest reliable signs are reduced appetite, fewer or smaller droppings, a hunched posture, and reduced grooming. A rabbit that has not eaten or passed droppings for 12 hours or more should be seen by a veterinarian the same day.
What should rabbits eat?
Unlimited grass hay is the foundation, with a smaller amount of fresh greens and a measured portion of pellets. Constant hay intake keeps the gut moving and wears the continuously growing teeth. Confirm the right amounts for your rabbit with your veterinarian.
Do rabbits need vet visits if they seem healthy?
Yes. Annual or twice-yearly exams let a veterinarian check the back teeth, which owners cannot see, and establish a weight baseline that makes later changes obvious.
