Reptile health: husbandry checks and warning signs

Most reptile illness starts as a husbandry problem. Temperature gradient, UVB, humidity and diet are the four things a veterinarian will ask about first, so measure them rather than estimating. Species requirements differ widely - check the numbers for your exact species.

Quick reference

Temperature
Species-specific gradient, measured with a probe
UVB
Correct output, replaced on schedule
Humidity
Species-specific, measured with a hygrometer

Commonly cited general figures for context. Requirements vary by species, breed and individual - confirm the right numbers for your pet with a veterinarian.

Check every day

  • Record basking and cool-end temperatures from a probe, not a stick-on dial.
  • Check humidity and water availability.
  • Note appetite and whether food is being tracked and taken.
  • Look at the eyes, nostrils and mouth for discharge or retained shed.
  • Check the vent and tail tip for stuck shed or swelling.

Track over time

  • Weight trend and body condition along the tail base and hips.
  • Shedding quality and how complete each shed is.
  • Jaw or limb changes that can accompany metabolic bone problems.
  • Reduced activity that tracks with a drop in enclosure temperature.

Relevant PetSenseAI scan modes: Eyes, Skin and shed, Wounds, Weight, Stool. Scans document what is visible and rank urgency. They do not diagnose.

Call a veterinarian now

Any of these means reptiles need professional care without waiting. Do not use an app to decide whether to go.

  • Open-mouth breathing, bubbles at the nostrils, or wheezing.
  • Sudden weakness, tremors, or an inability to right itself.
  • Retained shed constricting a toe or the tail tip.
  • A prolapse, a burn, or an open wound.
  • Repeated failed attempts to pass eggs.

If your pet is in distress - collapse, laboured breathing, seizures, uncontrolled bleeding, suspected poisoning, bloat, or trauma - stop and contact an emergency veterinarian or a poison control line immediately. Do not wait for a scan result.

Common questions

Why do reptiles get sick from husbandry?
Reptiles depend on external heat and light to digest food and support their immune system. If the temperature gradient, UVB or humidity is wrong, normal body functions slow down, which is why veterinarians review husbandry first.
How often should UVB bulbs be replaced?
UVB output falls long before the bulb stops emitting visible light, so replace on the manufacturer's schedule rather than waiting for it to fail. Confirm the right interval for your specific fixture and species.
Is open-mouth breathing an emergency in a reptile?
Treat it as urgent and contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian. It can indicate respiratory disease, which does not resolve on its own.
